Creating great content, growing your audience, and monetizing your shows are the pillars of a successful podcast business. But none of that is sustainable without complying with increasingly complex privacy regulations. As privacy laws continue to evolve, compliance is no longer optional; it’s foundational to protecting your revenue and reputation.
To help you meet these requirements with consistency and scale, Simplecast launched Podcast Consent Manager, a streamlined solution designed to help you with U.S. and Canadian privacy requirements. The tool gives your listeners in the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec) a notice of the collection and use of their information for personalized advertising and a clear, user-friendly way to control such use.
Important!
- The Podcast Consent Manager and opt-out functionality apply to shows hosted on Simplecast, an AdsWizz company, for ads served through AdsWizz.
- The Podcast Consent Manager opt-outs have no effect for ads served by other platforms that are not delivered by AdsWizz.
- The implementation of the Podcast Consent Manager does not relieve publishing partners from their own responsibilities to the listener under applicable laws.
What Is Podcast Consent Manager and How Does It Work?
Podcast Consent Manager is a built-in solution for managing your listeners’ preferences for personalized advertising.
Here’s how it works:
A link to the Podcast Consent Manager has been automatically added to the bottom of your episode notes for every show in your network. When listeners click the link, they’re provided with an opportunity to read about the use of their data to personalize ads and are directed to a dedicated page where they can elect to opt out of personalized advertising. This doesn’t mean they’ll stop hearing ads; it means ads will not be personalized using identifiable listener data such as IP-derived geolocation, behavioral patterns, or device signals.
This approach gives your listeners more control over their privacy while you continue to run a scalable, ad-supported model in alignment with applicable U.S. and Canadian privacy requirements.
What Do My Listeners See?
When a listener taps the Podcast Consent Manager link in your episode notes, they are taken to a clear, user-friendly interface that offers a link to a privacy policy describing what information is collected and how it is used for personalized ads, and explains what opting out of individually targeted advertising entails. To proceed, they enter their email address and submit the request. Once successfully processed, a confirmation message is displayed. The opt-out is applied based on the specific information provided by the listener, such as their email and/or IP address, and is implemented across all shows hosted on Simplecast. This ensures their data preferences are respected in accordance with the details they submit.
This consistent experience builds trust, supports brand integrity, and allows you to meet privacy obligations without overwhelming your internal teams.
Note: The Podcast Consent Manager link will become visible once the RSS feed is updated, which typically happens when a new episode is published.
Key Benefits
- Consent Management Made Simple: Podcast Consent Manager is integrated into the episode notes to help you meet the U.S. and Canadian privacy requirements for personalized advertising. Note: Quebec has specialized, enhanced privacy requirements that are not within Podcast Consent Manager, and Podcast Consent Manager does not apply to Quebec.
- Seamless, Automated Integration: Simplecast takes care of the implementation, embedding the opt-out link directly into your episode notes.
- Build Listener Trust: Offering a privacy notice and a clear opt-out option shows respect for your audience’s privacy and builds long-term trust and brand credibility.
- Increased Monetizable Reach in Strictly Regulated Regions: With Podcast Consent Manager, Simplecast (and AdsWizz) treat listeners in the U.S. and Canada (other than those from Quebec) as opted-in to personalized advertising unless they actively opt out through the Podcast Consent Manager or otherwise. This enables more listeners to experience personalized ad targeting.

FAQs
Is there anything I need to do?
No action is required on your part. Podcast Consent Manager is automatically implemented by Simplecast across all supported players where your show is available. The opt-out mechanism applies to ads supported by AdsWizz technology, including direct ad sales and the Simplecast Marketplace. It does not apply to all forms of monetization, such as host reads or ads that are inserted by distribution platforms or servers other than AdsWizz.
How does Podcast Consent Manager impact my revenue?
Podcast Consent Manager can help strengthen revenue over time. Non-compliance with privacy laws can lead to legal consequences and revenue disruption. By proactively addressing privacy requirements through tools like Podcast Consent Manager, you mitigate these risks and protect revenue continuity.
Podcast Consent Manager can help surface more monetizable impressions and enable broader personalized ad targeting. When implemented, all listeners are considered opted in unless they actively choose to opt out through the Podcast Consent Manager. This frictionless approach allows for greater use of listener data while providing a transparent opt-out mechanism. The result is increased access to targeted advertising opportunities and the potential for revenue growth.
In addition, demonstrating transparency through privacy-respecting practices builds listener trust, encourages higher engagement and loyalty, and makes your inventory more attractive to premium advertisers. As privacy expectations continue to rise, Podcast Consent Manager helps ensure your revenue strategy stays both compliant and competitive.
Is the listener's consent across all devices and players?
Yes. The Podcast Consent Manager is available across all devices and players.
How does Podcast Consent Manager work for shows outside the U.S. or Canada?
The Podcast Consent Manager link appears on all shows hosted on Simplecast and monetized through the AdsWizz platform. However, the opt-out functionality only applies to listeners located in the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec).
Listeners from other regions are subject to other privacy regulations and are not covered by Podcast Consent Manager. For example, if a listener in London accesses the PCM link, the AdsWizz system will detect that the IP address is outside the supported region and will not process an opt-out request.
Can I see the link to the Podcast Consent Manager in the Simplecast UI?
Yes. You can see the text and link directing listeners to the Podcast Consent Manager in the Notes section when creating or editing an episode.
What advertising preferences can listeners opt out of on the link?
When accessing the Podcast Consent Manager link, listeners are taken to a dedicated page where they can opt out of personalized advertising as a whole, not individual types of targeting. This means they won't receive ads tailored to them based on personal data, such as listening behavior across time or demographic criteria. They'll still hear ads, but those will be delivered based on general criteria like podcast content, time of day, or device type, not on listener-specific information.
How exactly does Podcast Consent Manager affect ad targeting?
Ad targeting capabilities depend on whether the listener has opted out of personalized advertising or not. Here's how each scenario works:
- Without Consent (Privacy-Protected Advertising)
When a listener opts out, targeting is limited to protect their privacy, meaning their personal information is no longer used for cross-context behavioral advertising or to deliver ads based on their individual data. Here’s what that looks like:
Completely Disabled:
- Custom Audience Targeting – Not available
- Weather-Based Targeting – Not available
- IP-Based Targeting – No use of location derived from IP address data
Limited Functionality:
- User Identification – Only basic, site-specific, or platform-specific IDs are allowed.
- Demographics – Based on general statistical models (not tied to personal data):
- Age (e.g., 25–34: 18%, 35–44: 30%)
- Gender: 50% Female / 50% Male
- Location/IP Handling – IP addresses are used only for limited measurement and reporting purposes (e.g., reach and frequency capping).
- Ad Format Support – Limited to basic interactive formats (e.g., ShakeMe)
Always Enabled (regardless of consent/opt out):
- Fraud Prevention
- Content-Based Targeting (e.g., based on the podcast’s topic or keywords, including age/gender composition of a podcast show’s audience)
- Device Capabilities (e.g., Alexa, Google Home)
- Device Type Detection (e.g., player name, smartphone, gaming console, etc.)
- With Consent (Targeted Advertising Enabled)
If a listener does not opt out, full ad targeting capabilities are available:
All Features Enabled:
- Information about the podcast listener
- Custom Audience Targeting
- Behavioral and Demographic Segments
- IP-Based Targeting
- Weather-Based Targeting
How long does it take for the system to recognize that a listener has opted out?
Listener opt-out requests are fully processed within 48 hours. The opt-out is applied immediately to the IP address used at the time of submission. However, it may take up to 48 hours to match the listener’s email to any additional IP addresses they’ve used and /or provided during the opt-out request.
